Mike Schifferdecker aka Shifty

I Likes Bikes I first got into riding bikes as a kid, raging the neighborhood with my homies on 20-inch BMX bikes. Then, when we all got into high school, mountain bikes became our passion, but not so much in the mountains, more like riding thru downtown Chicago doing the urban shred. As I got older I got more and more into mountain biking specifically. I guess it helped that I started working in bike shops during my sophomore year in high school and continued to do so on and off until I started working for myself 7 years ago. Recently, within the last 10 years, I’ve really gotten into adventure riding - aka bike packing - and WWWWWAAY MORE into mountain biking. Gravel riding has become my go-to in the winter. I gain my inspiration for riding bikes from my close friends here in Fort Collins as well as the cycling community here in town, where I have meet soo many of my friends that I call family.

Schooling/Day Gig I went to public grade school in the Chicagoland area and then I attended/graduated from a Catholic/all dudes high school in 1996. I eventually went to Western Illinois University and graduated with a BA in Recreation, Park, and Tourism and a minor in Law Enforcement in 2002. I came to Colorado to pursue a career with the USDA Forest Service in 2003 but that endeavor ended by choice in 2007. At that point, I permanently took residency in Fort Collins after living here seasonally for those years of working for the Forest Service. Fast forward to today, I run my own business (SHIFTY GLASS) as a Glassblower, and have been doing so for the last 7 years now.I also work for the Ramble Ride based in Fort Collins, as the Sag Van Man on the actual rides. Here at Send Town, I am now the Director of Coaching. And Lastly, I’m a volunteer with Homeward Alliance's Bike Repair Program.

Why I Volunteer I got involved with CYF then Send Town to try to give back a little to the cycling community by helping provide all-inclusive mountain biking opportunities to the youth. The joy that I see in the faces and souls of these riders and the confidence that it brings is the reason I keep helping and the reason it is so important to me and my family.

Best Reason to Check out SendTown Bike Club A positive community breeds positive people and Send Town reflects those qualities. New and returning riders should expect to enhance their riding skills while having a great time!

When I’m not Riding Bikes I could write about a ton of reasons to check out SendTown, but the biggest one is if you are looking to make a difference in the lives of the youth and help provide opportunity for the local youth. This is one of the best ways to do so… Especially if you love riding Bikes!

Other interests Other than cycling, let's see… I love to be outdoors so camping and hiking in our  beautiful state is always a staple. I have a huge passion for music and going to see live shows is another passion of mine. I also play the drums in my free time but have been getting the itch to start up a band and start playing locally again.

Why I Volunteer The energy, excitement and magic that occurs when a young person experiences the thrill of a ride is infectious. I want to be involved in harboring an environment where young people can learn to ride, race and socialize while on a bike.

Best Reason to Check out SendTown Bike Club Kids need some sort of activity in their life to be complete, while parents seem to be searching for a way to connect to the kids. The programs that are offered by STBC offer something that most youth sports cannot- an activity that connects you to your child, that can last a lifetime.

Other interests Father to 2 cool grown kids. Bike packing. Woodworking. But I feel most alive when on the river, traveling, skiing or connecting to nature in secluded, quiet places.
