Weather and Environmental Conditions Policy
By registering for a program, athletes and families acknowledge and agree to this policy.
Our Approach
Our goal is to hold every scheduled practice whenever it is safe to do so. In Colorado, variable weather is part of the riding experience, and we aim to build resilient, prepared athletes without making cycling unsafe or unenjoyable for athletes or coaches.
Practices proceed in adverse manageable conditions, including wind, rain, and cold or heat. Athletes are expected to arrive prepared with appropriate clothing and equipment for the conditions.
When trails are closed or too muddy to ride, practices may be relocated to hard-surface venues or adapted to alternative training activities.
Cancellations or Modifications
Practices may be cancelled, shortened or otherwise altered due to extreme or unsafe weather and environmental conditions, including but not limited to lightning, excessive temperature, or poor air quality.
Cancellation decisions are made collaboratively by the coaching team using multiple sources of weather and environmental data
Per our Cancellations and Refunds Policy, no refunds or make-up sessions are provided for weather-related cancellations unless otherwise specified in the program details
Communication
Weather-related updates and cancellations will be communicated via TeamSnap
We monitor forecasts throughout the day and aim to make a decision as early as possible, typically by about one hour before practice, though conditions may require decisions closer to the start time
Athlete & Parent Responsibilities
Parents/guardians are responsible for:
Monitoring TeamSnap for updates and remaining nearby and available, especially on days with questionable weather
Ensuring athletes arrive with appropriate clothing and gear for the conditions
Athletes without required weather-appropriate clothing may not be allowed to participate
Final participation decisions always remain at the parent/guardian’s discretion based on the conditions on any given day
Weather-Specific Guidelines
Precipitation: We try not to let this get in the way of a good bike ride!
This is one of the areas where clothing has the biggest impact on an athlete’s ability to participate comfortably. A good rain jacket is critical!
Temperature
Practices proceed over 40°F and below 100°F
Smoke & Air Quality
Air quality is monitored using Air Now
Under 100aqi we have practice
100–110aqi games only
120aqi practice is cancelled
Lightning
Lightning is monitored using WeatherBug
Practice is cancelled when lightning is detected within 10 miles
Due to rapidly developing Front Range storms, practices may be shortened or cancelled with little notice to ensure all athletes return safely to the parking area before lightning activity.
